The 2022 Subaru WRX has been revealed in full, featuring a 271hp motor and AWD, just don’t expect to see one in your local Subaru dealership.

Here is the all-new 2022 Subaru WRX, reborn on a fresh platform with a new engine, new looks and an STI model on the horizon. Sadly, though, like the 2022 Subaru BRZ, the new WRX won’t be making its way to the UK.

The new look is certainly striking, with SUV-style arch trims mixed with a traditional bonnet scoop and quad exhaust. Identity crisis? Quite possibly. We’ll live in hope the STI version turns the heat up a touch in the looks department.

Underneath the new WRX is the fresh platform used across the Subaru range in the Outback, Forester and Impreza models, with additional structural rigidity (24% increase across the body, 75% rise in stiffness around suspension mounts).

Like the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR 86, it’s powered by a 2.4-litre flat-four Boxer engine, only this time it gets the addition of a turbo to boost power to 271bhp at 5000rpm and 258lb ft of torque between 2000 and 5000rpm. Does that spell out a turbocharged BRZ STI in the works, too?

Don’t expect the 2022 Subaru WRX to trouble the likes of the Golf R or similar all-wheel drive hyper-hatches, this is pitched more at the Focus ST, Golf GTI level.

You can choose between a six-speed manual or a fancy CVT automatic, while power is sent to all four wheels as you’d expect.

And an all-new Subaru WRX STI, too?

Hold your horses. It’s coming, but not yet. You can expect a more aggressive setup, with the typical big wing on the back and a hike in power. How that hike will arrive is unknown, with rumours pointing towards a potential hybrid setup geared towards performance.
