We’ve got another project car! This time we’ve teamed up with Machine Mart to breath some new life into a BMW 335i.
We’ve done it! After months of searching, we’ve finally picked up a BMW E92 335i, and let’s just say, we’re excited to get started on our budget-build project. This car has it all—a legendary N54 twin-turbo engine, a balanced chassis, and loads of potential just waiting to be unlocked. And, to make things even better, it already has some tasty performance upgrades under the bonnet in the form of an induction kit, custom remap and performance downpipes. So, we’re off to a flying start!
With the power sorted, we’re focusing on the essentials that will take this build to the next level. We’ll upgrade key areas including the suspension, wheels, tyres, and styling. And, we’re going to show you how you can undertake similar projects in the comfort of your own garage. Armed with a selection of affordable yet quality and reliable tools from our project sponsors, Machine Mart, all of the upgrades and modifications we will make can just as easily be completed by any competent DIY mechanic with the right tools.
The Starting Point: A Solid Base
This isn’t just any old 335i. Thanks to our friends over at Car Mechanics magazine, this Bavarian beauty has already been given a full mechanical once-over. They’ve taken care of any worn-out parts, and the brakes have been fully refurbished, so we’re all set in that department. It’s now running like a dream—smooth, powerful, and ready for some serious upgrades.
With the power and braking systems already dialled in, we can shift our focus to areas that will enhance the car’s handling and looks, making it a standout on both the road and the track. So, what’s on the list? Let’s break it down.
Suspension: Getting the Handling Right
The E92 is a fantastic car, but in stock form, the suspension could use a bit of fine-tuning to really unleash its potential. That’s why we’re planning a full suspension upgrade for our BMW 335i project to give us more control over how the car behaves. Our goal is to reduce body roll and give a more responsive feel in the corners. We’re currently eyeing a set of coilovers that will allow us to adjust the ride height and damping, so we can dial in the perfect setup for both street driving and weekend track days.
Wheels and Tyres: Putting Power to the Pavement
One of the first things any enthusiast will notice on a build is the wheels. The stock rims on the 335i just aren’t going to cut it for us, so we’re on the hunt for the perfect set of aftermarket wheels. We’re looking for something lightweight to reduce unsprung weight, but with enough style to make this car turn heads. Alongside the wheels, we’ll be fitting a fresh set of performance tyres to make sure all that power from the N54 engine is transferred to the tarmac with maximum grip.
Styling: Modernising the Look
The E92 is a classic design, but we want to give it a modern twist. We’re planning some subtle but aggressive styling upgrades, including a front splitter and rear spoiler to add to its road presence. We’re also considering a set of carbon fibre accents to give it that race-ready look without going over the top.
What’s Next?
This is just the beginning, and we’ve got big plans for our BMW 335i project. In the coming weeks, we’ll be diving into the specifics of each upgrade, documenting the process, and sharing the results with you here and on our YouTube channel. Whether you’re planning your own build or are just following along for inspiration, we’re excited to show you how we get on.
Stay tuned for the next update, where we’ll be tackling the suspension and showing you just how much of a difference it can make…
