Dymag has got a fresh OEM project on its hands, following the announcement that they’ll be designing a new range of carbon Hyundai N wheels.
Dymag has got a storied history when it comes to constructing alloy wheel rims. The British company has produced rims for all sorts of elite projects, from Nigel Mansell’s 1985 championship-winning F1 car, to the controversial SSC Tuatara high-speed run. Of course, given that this is Fast Car, it’s also worth mentioning that Dymag’s been pretty prevalent in the aftermarket modified scene too.
Now though, Dymag has got a new OEM partner on its books – one of the best upcoming performance brands around, Hyundai N. Recently, the South Korean marque unveiled its latest model, the Ioniq 5 N, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where a prototype of Dymag’s new carbon-composite wheel was on display (as shown above).
Dymag’s carbon Hyundai N wheels in detail
Although the exact specs aren’t yet public, Dymag’s initial preview sounds rather impressive. Hankuk Carbon has supplied the raw materials for its carbon outer edge, while the center of the rim is a forged metal. According to Dymag, this blend should weigh around 40-50% less than a regular cast aluminum alloy wheel. On top of that, this new generation of wheels is stiffer, stronger, and offers less rotational inertia (which can result in better grip).
What’s for certain though is that Hyundai has made a solid choice when picking its supplier for this project. After all, Dymag brought the first ever carbon composite wheel rims to the mass automotive market way back in 2004. So, it’s fair to say that they’ve got the required experience!
Tom de Lange, CEO of Dymag said, “We are delighted we are working with Hyundai on the development of advanced, lightweight carbon hybrid wheels for its N Performance products. The first result of the collaboration between Dymag and Hankuk Carbon, the new wheel technology further cements Dymag’s position as a leading OEM partner for the global automotive industry.
“This is the start of what we hope is a long and fruitful relationship with Hyundai, which will bring our game-changing technology to a wider audience of global automotive customers. Carbon hybrid wheels from Dymag bring many benefits for high-performance vehicles, with very low capital expenditure for car makers thanks to our patented technology and lean production methods. We look forward to announcing further OEM agreements very soon.”
