how to fit install a headunit

STEP 1  – REMOVE STOCK HEADUNIT
First things first – whenever you’re working on anything electrical, disconnect the battery! Now that’s out of the way, it’s time to pull out the stock head unit. Normally you’ll need a set of the original keys that come with it or you may have to take the facia apart. Either way you need to get the stocker out, and the new headunit cage in.

STEP 2  – PLUG IT IN
All aftermarket units come with a standard ISO connection, meaning you can usually buy a vehicle-specific adaptor and just plug it in! So do this, and don’t forget the separate radio aerial or RCAs if you have an amp.

STEP 3 – SLIP IT IN!
Now you’re all wired in, make sure you tuck all the wires out of the way behind before you pop the headunit into its cage. It’s worth noting too that we’ve been lucky on Lee’s Polo as it already has a standard DIN sized hole in the dash. If your car doesn’t, don’t worry too much; there’s plenty of specific facia adaptors on the market.

STEP 4  – TURN IT ON
Once your spanky new headunit is securely in place, it’s time to test it out. Reconnect the car battery and make sure it all works. If it’s supposed to turn off with the ignition and doesn’t, (or the presets on the radio reset every time you turn it off) swap over the red (switch live) and yellow (permanent live) wires on the ISO connector..
