The biggest, baddest, most audacious array of machinery, along with live action shows, competitions and tyre-smoking demonstrations were among the major attractions during the TRAX performance car show at Silverstone Circuit on Sunday (October 1).
A must for petrolheads, the TRAX show was a true celebration of performance car culture allowing more than 18,000 visitors to not only view automotive excellence at close quarters but also experience it. With sponsors including BC Forged Wheels, BC Suspension, HardRace, K-sport, Goodridge, Samco, ValetPRO, VIBE Audio, EBC Brakes and Toyo Tires, this was manna from heaven for fast car enthusiasts.
Top of the list for many was the Toyo Tires-sponsored Caterham rides in the Live Action Arena where visitors had the opportunity to hone their drifting skills at the wheel of a165bhp Caterham under the guidance of a professional racing driver. After being eased in gently, drivers got the chance to go it alone on a specially prepared drift course and then set a timed lap.
Public track time was also a massive draw with members of the public allowed to take their own performance cars out for hot laps at the iconic home of British motorsport.
Another highlight was the Toyo Tires Challenge, offering visitors the chance to test their wheel-change skills. For aspiring F1 pitlane mechanics the task was simple: to change a wheel in the fastest time possible.
Brand new to TRAX was the 200mph Club, a paddock honouring the machinery that has gone upwards of 200mph, whether in standard form or heavily modified. Stars of the display included a rather special Audi R8 V10 with a twin-turbo set up, a 1750bhp Lamborghini Gallardo Spider capable of hitting 236mph and a mighty McLaren P1.
For the second year running a display of purpose-built track day machinery was on show at the TRAX Legends Display featuring, among others, a Caterham 620R, Renault Clio Mk1 and Mk3 Cup cars, a Vauxhall Astra GTE, Golf GTi, Ford Escort Cosworth, Lotus Elise, Caterham 7, Honda Integra Type R DC5, Porsche Cayman S ‘GT3’, Fiesta XR2i Turbo, BMW E46 M3 and Porsche 911 GT3 RS.
Other attractions included demos by the British Drift Championship offering tyre smoking thrills in an opposite-lock showcase, the Fuel Girls pyrotechnic performance in the Live Action Arena and also the ValetPRO Show & Shine competition. The standard for this prestigious contest proved particularly high with Daniel Osborne taking top honours for his immaculate Mini Cooper S, closely followed by James Melbourne and his Mini Cooper XT, with Katie Rouse’s Peugeot 207 GT taking third spot.
Other prizewinners included Street Defects, who took the best Club Award, and Dan Hunt who scooped Individual Display Car of the Show for his wonderful Nissan Sunny. Another visitor who went home smiling was Ashleigh Hare who was the lucky winner of a 2002 Honda S2000 GT.
Other highlights at TRAX were, of course, the display cars themselves with more than 4,500 on show. The VIBE Audio Car Culture Collection was a particularly popular with a display of more than 100 feature-worthy cars on display from track toys to modified monsters, while the Retail Village continued its success with more stands offering all manner of car-related products.
Event director Phil Weeden said: “This is a fantastic event for performance car enthusiasts and it is growing every year. There’s so much to see, so much to do and, with the addition of new features to entertain the fans, we expect next year’s event to be even bigger.”
Dates for the 2018 event are expected to be announced before the end of the year. To find out more and keep in touch go to TRAX
