With the show season just around the corner, we thought we oughta do something about the state of the team’s wheels – especially with TRAX and the two Japfest shows in mind. We needed something that could cut it on the track, fit our hoards of fans inside, and be capable of schlepping the many hundreds of miles in-between the glamorous and exotic shoot locations that make up daily FC life.
Seeing as they have come onboard as show partners this year, we decided to camp outside the office of Pro-R – Subaru UK’s official tuning arm – and annoy them until they gave us a car just to go away. This cunning plan worked, and before Security had to get involved, big-boss Darren agreed to meet us at a foggy Castle Combe to chuck us the keys to a brand spanking new STi saloon.
It’s a lovely thing in standard trim of course, with the 300 brake motor being less than shy, especially in ‘Sport #’ mode, but what with them being the official Subaru tuner, and us being us, it was never going to stay that way for long.
We were soon on the blower looking to get a few mods lined up. Lucky for us, the Pro-R range contains everything we need – from rims, brakes and styling, through to performance mods, dress-up bits and even a swanky coffee cup, so Jules doesn’t have to go without his double espresso on the way to shoots. Sorted.
We thought we’d also use to opportunity to get a bit of road-trip action in too, The STi isn’t shy in stock trim visiting a few of the Pro-R dealers in a bit of a Power- Tour stylee. First up was the impressive Keith Price Garages in Abergavenny.
After we’d taken in the vast array of Nicky Grist memorabilia and trophies in (he used to work there!), it was into the workshop for technician Peter to fit the genuine rear spoiler upgrade and race-spec Pro-R rims – as fitted to the immense Cosworth CS400. We ordered ours in black… which is the new black..
As you might imagine when fitting OEM stuff, everything just drops on. The rear wing kit is so complete, it even comes with a whole new boot lid to go with it! All pre-drilled, with uprated torsion bars to keep the boot up.
We haven’t bothered to paint it yet, as we’re going to give the car a killer wrap in the next few weeks anyway. So boots on and spoiler fitted it’s already looking twice the car and much more like an STI should. Time to take out shares in the local Shell station, we reckon!
